propagation delay

propagation delay
In communications, any delay between the time a signal enters the transmission channel and the time it is received.
This delay is relatively small across a LAN, but can become considerable in satellite communications, in which the signal must travel from one earth station to the satellite and back to earth again. Unusually long delays may require the use of specialized hardware to ensure that the link is not broken prematurely.
